Two Years

Today is birthday two for the kiddo.

It’s hard for me to process how much has happened in the last two years. We went from having a helpless baby to having a charming, intelligent, loud little person. And I am not entirely sure how it happened.

The weird sense of “parent time” has not faded. Two years is simultaneously a long time and no time at all. In some sense, watching the kiddo grow has been like watching a time-lapse recording. Everything moves really quickly, blurring by faster than the eye can follow. And yet you can feel that it’s really at lot of time compressed, sped up for dramatic effect.

I don’t know what the next year holds for our little family but it is certain to be interesting.

P.S.

The kiddo got some nice gifts from friends and family (thanks, y’all!). And we also added three l’il turquoise guppies to the family roster. Unfortunately, “jer” (the kiddo named them: the other two as “jer-do” and “jer-dick”) didn’t last 24 hours. I have my suspicions about how it might have happened (I’m looking at you, jer-dick), but I can’t prove anything. Guppies are crafty like that.

It’s potty time!

Miss Z has shown some interest in the potty for a while now, but as of today’s a member of the Potty User’s Club. 20 minutes of sitting and the result was nothing much, just a little squirt, but this a momentous event nonetheless. Z just hit the 19 month mark last week, so I’m hoping we can have her feeling good about using the potty regularly by her second birthday.

Here’s hoping! :)

BTW: this is my first on the brand-spanking new WordPress 2.5 and I have to say, it’s sweet!

Note: I originally wrote this post three months ago. I’m ashamed that I never put it up; I’ve let my work like get in the way of my real life. Anyhow, the time warp thing I mentioned below is still happening. Just hours after I wrote this, Z started walking on her own. And yet that already seems like the distant past. All the more reason to chronicle as much as I can.

Blowing out the candle

Z turned 1 yesterday. A whole year has passed already and that just doesn’t seem possible. Being a parent to a young child does some weird things to your sense of time.

New job, day 1

I started my new job today.

Wait, did I mention that I was getting a new job? Well, I am, er, did. And I started today.

I’m looking forward to the change; I was at the old job for a long time and I probably should have left a couple of years ago. I adored most of the people I worked with and that kept me going long after the bloom was gone, gone, gone.

And now I find myself starting a new job for the first time in years. And I like it. The pace is going to be much faster and I’m hoping that the challenges will be just that, challenging. They’ve thrown me into two projects already. Trial by fire! Learn by doing! Tally-ho, what! This should be fun. ;-)

And besides that, my commute just transmogrified itself into a 10 minute walk. Nice, eh?

Happy girl

Z is getting more interesting with each passing day. It seems sort of like she’s accelerating: it used to be that there would be one new “trick” everyday or two, then everyday, and now it seems like there are three or more. It’s fascinating to watch.

Right now, she is:

  1. Working on getting up on her hands and knees!
  2. Learning to wave!
  3. Trying out new sounds! (she says “dada” but it doesn’t mean anything yet…at least we don’t think so)
  4. Chewing, chewing, chewing!

K tells me that Z made significant progress on item #1 and actually managed to push herself up on hands and knees. Next stop, crawling! Wa-hoo!!!
