Theory and Practice

It’s Potty Time!

Miss Z has shown some interest in the potty for a while now, but as of today’s a member of the Potty User’s Club. 20 minutes of sitting and the result was nothing much, just a little squirt, but this a momentous event nonetheless. Z just hit the 19 month mark last week, so I’m hoping we can have her feeling good about using the potty regularly by her second birthday.

Here’s hoping! :)

BTW: this is my first on the brand-spanking new WordPress 2.5 and I have to say, it’s sweet!

Birthday Girl

Birthday Balloon

Note: I originally wrote this post three months ago. I’m ashamed that I never put it up; I’ve let my work like get in the way of my real life. Anyhow, the time warp thing I mentioned below is still happening. Just hours after I wrote this, Z started walking on her own. And yet that already seems like the distant past. All the more reason to chronicle as much as I can.

Blowing out the candle

Z turned 1 yesterday. A whole year has passed already and that just doesn’t seem possible. Being a parent to a young child does some weird things to your sense of time.

Unwrapping a gift

It seems like no time since Z was a minutes-old infant on the warming table in the hospital and now. And yet it also seems like forever, like the longest year of my life. And both states are true.

Cake!

It is almost as if I’m living in some weird quantum experiment.

More wrapping fun

Grandma Mary Ann, Aunt Andrea and Cousion Saiorse were on hand for the fun, as was my buddy Stewart. It was a hot day and a good time was had by all. Especially the munchkins, who stripped down to bloomers for coolness and maximum cake spread!

Cousins

Thanks, Stewart!

A Scary Day, but We’re OK

We had a very scary thing happen today. K was leaving the house this afternoon and she tripped while carrying the baby girl. They both went down on the hard concrete blocks that make up the path. K bruised her knee and it seems that Z hit her head on one of the blocks. They’re both OK, and I was here when it happened so I was able to help out.

I’m Back, Baby!

After months of neglecting this blog, and the temporary loss of the stonehippo.com domain, I’m finally back!

A lot has happened since my last post. I can’t believe that it’s October already. Z has grown up SOOOO much. She’s had her first birthday, learned to walk and is starting to talk. She’s moved into full-blown toddlerdom.

Z in the park

I’m not going to allow such a long lapse again. I need to reclaim my life, which has seemed so full of work and not the things that really matter. Keeping those who care to know up-to-date is a big part of that. So expect something new everyday.

It feels good to be back.

How Many Sheep Is Enough?

Last week we trekked out to Drumlin Farm to show Z some farm biota: sheep, goats, chickens and a mule or two. Drumlin, which is a Mass Audubon-run site, also has some rescued wild birds including some hawks, owls, and falcons. Z wasn’t really sure what to make of it all: she sort of gave all of the animals the hairy eyeball (so to speak).

This weekend, we met up with some friends to check Davis’ Farmland. Lo and behold more sheep, goats, ponies, cows. You know: farm animals. And it was great!

Davis’ Farmland is a wonderful place, sort of a petting zoo on steroids. The place is packed with all sorts four-legged friends and is geared entirely towards the yard monkey set. The folks at Davis’ are all geared toward providing a friendly, clean (yes, really), interactive experience for the 1 to 12 year olds of Massachusetts. It was quite enjoyable and I can say with certainty that we’ll be going there again.

And while I’m still not a big fan of goats overall, I have to admit, they’re growing on me.

P.S.

I will post new pictures of Z someday soon. I promise. :)

A Quick Update

Z is:

  • Clapping!
  • Eating Cheerios!
  • Is still working on crawling!
  • Is still a toothless wonder!

I’ve been very busy with the new job, but I’m planning to spend some time behind both the still and video cameras this weekend to bring you all the latest lovely photos on the beautiful Miss Z.

New Job, Day 1

I started my new job today.

Wait, did I mention that I was getting a new job? Well, I am, er, did. And I started today.

I’m looking forward to the change; I was at the old job for a long time and I probably should have left a couple of years ago. I adored most of the people I worked with and that kept me going long after the bloom was gone, gone, gone.

And now I find myself starting a new job for the first time in years. And I like it. The pace is going to be much faster and I’m hoping that the challenges will be just that, challenging. They’ve thrown me into two projects already. Trial by fire! Learn by doing! Tally-ho, what! This should be fun. ;-)

And besides that, my commute just transmogrified itself into a 10 minute walk. Nice, eh?

Happy Girl

Happy girl

Z is getting more interesting with each passing day. It seems sort of like she’s accelerating: it used to be that there would be one new “trick” everyday or two, then everyday, and now it seems like there are three or more. It’s fascinating to watch.

Right now, she is:

  1. Working on getting up on her hands and knees!
  2. Learning to wave!
  3. Trying out new sounds! (she says “dada” but it doesn’t mean anything yet…at least we don’t think so)
  4. Chewing, chewing, chewing!

K tells me that Z made significant progress on item #1 and actually managed to push herself up on hands and knees. Next stop, crawling! Wa-hoo!!!

A Series of Unfortunate Events

We’ve just returned a—full day late—from our short vacation. And why were we a day late, you might ask? Answer: Delta.

We arrived at the airport around 5 for our 7:40 PM departure and discovered after checking our luggage the our flight had been delayed. To 12:15 AM. “Great”, I though to my self, “Here is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. A chance to spend seven hours in an airport seat with an infant! Yippee!!!!”

Of course, that’s not really what I thought.
